PODIATRY & CHIROPODY

What exactly is a State Registered Podiatrist

The State Registered Podiatrist is a specialist who provides a fully comprehensive foot health service for conditions affecting the foot and lower limb.

As well as the usual chiropody maintenance of the feet including nail and verruca surgery, the podiatrist is trained to recognise developing orthopaedic conditions in children, and various other medical conditions which show up in the feet.

The main difference between chiropody and podiatry is the examination for structural imbalances in the feet. These may give rise to various painful conditions locally in the feet or lower leg, and may even contribute to pains in the knees, hips and back.

What will the Podiatrist do to help?

The podiatrist will initially give advice as to how to relieve immediate symptoms. This may involve her actually treating the foot, applying dressings, advising rest, or building a support which which may be worn inside the shoe to relieve pressure or correct any "incorrect mechanics". She may also recommend a more permanent (orthotic) support (possibly based on a plaster cast of your foot) to give longer lasting relief and correction and may recommend a program of exercises to avoid problems in the future.
