SHIATSU

A SHORT GUIDE

Shiatsu literally means "finger pressure", but palms, elbows, knees, and feet are used as appropriate. By applying pressure and stretches to meridians (energy pathways), Shiatsu encourages the smooth flow or energy in the body.

In Traditional Japanese and Chinese Medicine, disease or symptoms of disease occur when the body's energy (Qi or Ki) has a tendency to get stuck. The body then developes areas of excess or deficient energy.

Unlike most Western forms of bodywork, Shiatsu uses relaxed body weight to apply pressure, for this reason sessions take place on a padded surface at floor level. Shiatsu is performed is performed on the clothed body and no oils are used.

Shiatsu puts people in touch with their bodies, linking the mind with the physical body. An essential element of any Shiatsu treatment is the bringing about of a shift in perception. Unpleasant symptoms need to be viewed positively as valuable warning signs of a possibly deeper, sometimes hidden condition.
